The Story of ULM Strategic Consulting

The world and our collective future is at a key inflection point as we face an era of unprecedented global uncertainty, geopolitics, national security, and international affairs. ULM Strategic Consulting was born out of a desire to aid in the effort to find the path forward and understand what is behind the increasing number of international complexities and conflict.

Founded by retired Army Colonel and national security expert Dr. Jeff McCausland, ULM Strategic Consulting draws upon decades of experience at the highest levels of military strategy, academia, media decision making and policy advisory. Spanning from the battlefield to the White House Situation Room and into the world of corporate and government consulting, Dr. McCausland’s career has provided a unique vantage point on how global power dynamics shape decision-making at every level.

Having advised policymakers, military leaders, and executives navigating the complexities of modern conflict, Dr. McCausland recognized a critical need: leaders in government, business, and media require clear, actionable intelligence to make informed decisions in an ever-changing world. Thus, ULM Strategic Consulting was founded on the principle that deep expertise, timely analysis, and strategic foresight are the key to success in today’s geopolitical landscape.

Why ULM?

ULM provides wide-ranging strategic analysis on geopolitics so leaders can make informed choices – and understand leadership matters to the success of any endeavor. But its name also refers to a special place and myth from the past.

Following his graduation from West Point in 1972, Dr. McCausland served his initial Army assignment in the city of Ulm, Germany. These were formative years for him as he developed his leadership skills and understanding of  geopolitics. This was during the Cold War, and Dr. McCausland’s unit was part of the VII U.S. Corps that was deployed to deter an attack by the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact against America’s NATO allies.

He travelled throughout Europe, visited a divided Berlin, and the border between East and West Germany. These experiences provided him a better understanding of American foreign policy as well as a greater appreciation of the interests and perspectives of other nations.  He also met his lovely wife, Marianne, during this time

Ulm, Germany also has a rich history of its own. It is the birthplace of Albert Einstein, and its Gothic church – the Ulmer Munster – boasts one of the tallest church spires in the world at 530 feet tall. Built over a period of 500 years, this Lutheran church was finally completed in 1890.

A myth about this church underscores the need for leadership and analysis to achieve success. The “Ulmer Spatz” (sparrow) is the symbol of the city, and you see statues, carvings, statues, and souvenirs of it throughout the city.

There is even a carving of a Spatz – or sparrow – with a twig in its beak built into the church. This is a reference to an urban legend concerning the church’s construction in the 14th century. As the story goes, a large beam that was required did not fit through the city gate, which caused the chief architect to declare that the city wall would have to be modified. But a wise man saw a sparrow fly overhead with a twig for its nest. The twig was oriented lengthwise so that the bird could fly unencumbered to its nest. The man exclaimed, “Turn the beam lengthwise so it may fit through the gate!” The sparrow then led the builders and their beam through the winding city streets to the construction site at the center of Ulm.

Just as the Spatz guided the townsfolk, ULM will provide analysis to help direct leaders to the heart of the key issues that face our world.
